Over 40 years of collaboration between Sanofi and the University of Bordeaux
A short interview with Charlotte Malchère, (Director of Public Affairs Aquitaine, Poitou-Charentes and Limousin) to discover more about the long-lasting partnership between Sanofi and the University of Bordeaux.
Since when has collaboration existed between Sanofi and UBx?
Our initial collaboration started way back in 1973 when the Labaz pharmaceutical company, located in Ambarès, was acquired by Sanofi. Since then, it has developed widely into multi-faceted collaboration with shared projects in various educational and professional domains.
What are these shared projects?
Sanofi employs numerous graduates of UBx, now pharmacists within the company. We are therefore highly interested in accompanying and supporting the high-quality, innovative study programs on offer. An exceptional type of convention was signed with the Faculty of Pharmacy in 2010 and then renewed in 2013. This convention, which supports common educational initiatives between the Faculty and Sanofi, aims to inform and prepare students about their career perspectives. In concrete terms, several actions have been implemented: visits of plant sites, traineeships for students, participation in career workshops, financial support etc.
Sanofi is also strongly involved in the Bordeaux University Foundation*. One of the initial founders (since December 2009), it is a member of the Board of Directors thus partaking in the definition of the actions and priorities of the Foundation. Sanofi currently hosts an academic chair in biotechnology “Biotech” along within the institution ENSTBB- Bordeaux INP.
In addition, in 2013/2014, Sanofi donated and supported the creation of a university diploma in Management, Quality and New Missions for retail pharmacists. 27 pharmacists and/or students were trained in retail pharmacy for the academic year.
What is the added-value of this collaboration for Sanofi?
Such an investment in the training and preparation of students, ensures that Sanofi and the entire pharmaceutical industry, will benefit from future graduates who are ready and equipped for the working world of today. It is therefore of utmost importance to Sanofi to promote and support the academic excellence of the University of Bordeaux.
Focus on the Master Tecsan (“Technologies pour la Santé” – Health Technologies)
This Master aims to train students to become high-tech professionals in the health sector, more specifically in R&D, production, pharmacovigilance and pharmacy-economic affairs. It is a Master that may be tailored according to industrial needs and the professional project of the future graduates.
Under the leadership of President Tunon de Lara, the University of Bordeaux increasingly proposes innovative study programs such as this Master that respond both to the student program needs and to the opportunities available within local industrial sites. Four (out of a total of five) of the first Tecsan graduates thus completed their traineeship with Sanofi on the sites of Chilly-Mazarin, Sisteron, Marcy l’Etoile and Le Trait.
At Sanofi, those managing traineeships are highly committed to sharing their knowledge and skills with students. My tutor also played an important role, following the content of my university program, helping with the write-up of my traineeship report and carrying out mock professional interviews. Completing a traineeship in a large company such as Sanofi has allowed me to discover an important structure with various different pharmaceutical career opportunities and thus to be ready and fullyequipped for a position in such an organization.
Laurianne Beynac — who completed two traineeships and two years of work-linked training at Sanofi in the domain of Pharmacology in vivo research on the site of Chilly-Mazarin
* The objective of the Bordeaux University Foundation is to contribute to the development of the Bordeaux University campus site. It is the only patronage organization for the Bordeaux campus and represents a strong link between the university and the socio-economic sector. Thanks to donations received, the Foundation manages projects and activities in the domains of education, research, graduate employment, etc.
