ENLIGHT European University

The ENLIGHT project, submitted in response to the European Erasmus+ call for projects, was selected in 2020. Supported by the University of Bordeaux and 8 other European universities, the objective of this consortium is to contribute to the transformation of European higher education by providing students, in their role as engaged, citizens of the world, with the necessary resources to acquire the knowledge, skills and innovative capacity to confront the main societal transformations and to promote an equitable and sustainable quality of life.

An alliance to meet societal challenges

The joint project, led by the Universities of Bordeaux, Ghent (Belgium), Gottingen (Germany), Tartu (Estonia), the Basque Country (Spain), Galway (Ireland), Groningen (the Netherlands), Uppsala (Sweden) and Comenius Bratislava (Slovakia), is entitled “ENLIGHT” (European University Network to promote Equitable Quality of Life, Sustainability, and Global Engagement through Higher Education Transformation). Co-ordinated by the Universities of Ghent and Bordeaux, it’s goal is to promote quality of life, sustainability and citizen engagement at an international level via higher education transformation.

In order to achieve these objectives, ENLIGHT will develop new systems and methods in education and research that are adapted to the complex sustainable development problems facing cities and communities today. The focus will be on five of the main societal challenges that feature among the sustainable development objectives of the United Nations and which are: health and well-being, digital transformation, climate change, energy and circularity, social inequalities.

The internationalization of training and research

Obtaining Erasmus+ funding for this alliance of European universities constitutes a major step in the internationalization process of the University of Bordeaux.

ENLIGHT will significantly increase international mobility (for students, but also teachers and administrative staff), with innovative hybrid mobility offers.

Stéphanie Debette — Vice-President for External Relations

ENLIGHT reflects the commitment of partner universities to develop their teaching and research in order to better respond to the major societal challenges of today and tomorrow and to help their students to develop as concerned and engaged European citizens. Strongly anchored in its territories, as indicated by its subtitle "shaping our future cities and communities", the alliance collaborates closely with various players in the field in the form of "living labs" and regional and European academies.

The aim is to achieve by 2030, an integrated European university system without barriers for learning, teaching and cooperation at all levels of the ENLIGHT community. The educational programs will give birth to several thousand ENLIGHT alumni, who will disseminate European values, approaches based on societal challenges and high-level research coming from 9 partner universities across Europe and beyond.

The ENLIGHT alliance also opens up new possibilities to apply for future calls for research projects under H2020 and Horizon Europe.
