The Light Sciences and Technologies Graduate Research Program, part of the University of Bordeaux Graduate Research School, is one of 29 programs of excellence selected in 2017 by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the General Investment Commission. These programs were chosen within the framework of the national “Investments for the Future” program and a call for graduate research school projects.

The Light S&T program focuses on three domains, in which the University of Bordeaux is renowned for its expertise: Light Generation, manipulation and detection; Extreme regime of light; and Light imaging and biophotonics.

Labelled a “Campus of excellence”, the University of Bordeaux is associated with several top-level research infrastructures and companies within the domain of photonics, including the Megajoule Laser research facility (LMJ , the “Route des Lasers” (Lasers Road) competitive cluster and a branch of the Optics Institute Graduate School (IOGS). This Institute co-operates the Master program in Light Sciences and technologies.

The field of Photonics has the capacity to address some of the greatest revolutions of the 21st century, in energy, health sciences, advanced manufacturing, ICT, security or environmental protection...

Brahim Lounis — Scientific Director

Highly-trained researchers and engineers are needed to work on the rapidly evolving Research & Development within photonics. The Light S&T program responds to this need, providing training, research and close ties with industrial players.

With such a strong local competitive cluster within the domain of lasers along with wide-ranging expertise in photonics and medical imagery, the region of Bordeaux and the University of Bordeaux look set to continue to grow as a worldwide leader in the field of light sciences.
